Cardiff chapel celebrates 125th
29/06/2009Minny Street Independent church was opened at Whitsun,1884 to serve the Cathays area of Cardiff. Over the past month - beginning at Whitsun - a number of events were held to celebrate the chapel's 125th birthday.
The church expressed its thanks and celebrated its past and present in a Communion Service. In the evening, friends from other Welsh churches in Cardiff joined the congregation for a service where the Revd Owain Llyr Evans preached on "that good thing" (II Timothy 1:14). He emphasised that the celebrations were not just a time to look back, but also to face the future with renewed determination to protect "that good thing which was committed to you."
A new book - "Llewyrch Ddoe, Llusern Yfory", (The Light of Yesterday, the Lamp of Tomorrow) - giving the chapel's history was launched. It was edited by John Gilbert Evans, Glyn E. Jones and Iolo Walters. Minny Street's minister, the Revd Owain Llyr Evans (left), is seen here presenting one of the first copies to Dr Geraint Tudur, General Secretary of the Union of Independents.
Numerous events were held throughout June - including special services by the children, an exhibition in the vestry, a youth quiz, and a celebratory cake-cutting ceremony. Minny Street is a lively church, which looks to the future with hope and energy.
