Braille Appeal Success
09/02/2010Providing a Braille version of the New Testament and Psalms in Welsh will cost more than £21,000. But thanks to substantial contributions from the Bible Society, Christian denominations, churches and individuals, some £20,000 has already been raised. The ecumenical committee steering the project decided at a meeting at Ty John Penry today to ask the RNIB (Royal National Institute of Blind People) to start the work.
There was a magnificent response from chapels, churches and individuals from all parts of Wales, said the appeal’s patron, broadcaster Sulwyn Thomas. It’s obvious that the appe
al to enable blind people to ‘read’ the Bible in their own language was one which fired many people’s imagination.
My dream has come true ; I'm overjoyed, said Rhian Evans (right), who has been campaigning for a Braille version of the Scriptures in Welsh for a long time. The Bible should be available to everyone, said Rhian, who lost her sight as a young woman.
Only 30 languages have the Bible in Braille.
